Back to School Safety Tips
As students head back to school, it’s a good time for all of us to slow down and stay alert. School zones are getting busy again with increased foot traffic, school buses, and parents dropping off kids. A moment of distraction behind the wheel can lead to serious consequences. Recently, David Greene joined Studio 10 to talk about how drivers can help keep our streets safe for children this school year.
As school gets back in session, what should drivers be especially mindful of?
This time of year, you’ve got more kids walking to and from school, crossing streets, and waiting for buses. Drivers need to slow down in school zones, obey the posted speed limits, and be on the lookout, especially during morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups. Kids can be unpredictable, so extra caution is key.
Let’s talk about school buses. What do people need to remember when it comes to stopping for buses?
This is so important. When a school bus stops and extends its stop sign, all traffic, coming from both directions, must stop unless there’s a divided highway. Ignoring that stop sign puts kids at serious risk. Give buses plenty of space and always assume a child might be about to cross the street.
Are there legal consequences if someone is injured in a school zone or by a distracted driver?
Absolutely. If someone is injured, especially a child, because a driver was speeding, texting, or just not paying attention, that driver can be held legally responsible. School zones are clearly marked for a reason, and failing to follow the rules can result in both criminal charges and civil liability.
What’s your advice for parents or teens who walk or bike to school?
Stay visible! Bright clothing or reflective gear makes a big difference, especially in early morning hours. Use crosswalks and avoid distractions like headphones or phones while crossing the street. And always make eye contact with drivers before stepping into a crosswalk.
If someone is injured in or around a school zone, what should they do?
Call 911 and get medical help right away. If possible, document the scene with photos, witness info, anything that could help tell the story later. And then, talk to an experienced local personal injury attorney, like the lawyers at Greene & Phillips. These cases can be emotional and complex, especially when children are involved.
