Hit-and-Run Accidents

January 13, 2026/in Latest News, Personal Injury, Studio 10

Hit-and-run accidents are emotionally overwhelming and unfortunately more common than people realize. Whether you’re in a parking lot, on a busy roadway, or even walking as a pedestrian, it can be devastating to have someone cause an accident and then flee the scene. Recently, David Greene joined Studio 10 to explain what people should do after a hit-and-run and how victims can still recover damages.

Why do hit-and-run accidents happen, and how common are they?

Sadly, they’re more common than most people think. Sometimes the driver who caused the accident panics; they may be uninsured, impaired, unlicensed, or already in legal trouble. Instead of doing the right thing, they leave the scene. We see these accidents on highways, neighborhood streets, and especially in parking lots where people bump a car and take off. No matter why it happens, the victim is left dealing with the damage and injuries.

If someone experiences a hit-and-run accident, what should they do immediately?

First, call 911 so police can document the incident. If you’re able, take pictures of everything: your vehicle, the damage, the surrounding area, and any skid marks or debris. Look for witnesses and ask if anyone saw the vehicle or got a license plate number. Also check for nearby cameras: doorbell cameras, business surveillance, or traffic cameras. Even small details can help identify the driver later.

Does Greene & Phillips assist with identifying the driver in hit-and-run cases?

We do. We have a team of investigators who can help track down leads, gather video footage, talk with witnesses, and work with law enforcement when appropriate. In many cases, we’re able to identify the vehicle or driver even when the victim thought it was hopeless. Acting quickly gives us the best chance of finding useful evidence.

But what happens if the driver can’t be located at all? Do victims still have options?

Yes, and this is important. Even when the at-fault driver can’t be found, your own uninsured motorist coverage can step in to help cover medical bills, lost wages, and other damages. A lot of people don’t realize this. So even if the person who hit you disappears, you may still have the ability to recover compensation. That’s why carrying uninsured motorist coverage is so critical.

What should victims avoid doing after a hit-and-run accident?

Don’t chase the driver, it’s dangerous and can make the situation worse. Also, don’t try to negotiate or settle anything on your own if the driver later comes forward. And don’t assume you’re stuck just because you don’t know who hit you. Call a lawyer so we can explore every option, including your own insurance coverage.

And if someone needs help after a hit-and-run, how can they reach Greene & Phillips?

We make it easy. Stop by our office at 51 North Florida Street, no appointment needed. Or call or text us at 251-300-2000, or fill out a contact form. And if you can’t come to us, we’ll come to you.
