Who Is Responsible in a Multi-Car Accident?

March 27, 2026/in Car Accidents, Mobile, Personal Injury, Studio 10

When people think about car accidents, they often imagine two vehicles involved. But sometimes crashes involve several cars, especially on busy roads or highways. When that happens, determining who is responsible can be much more complicated. Recently, David Greene joined Studio 10 to explain how liability works in multi-car accidents.

When several vehicles are involved in a crash, how do investigators determine who was responsible?
In multi-car accidents, investigators typically look at how the crash began and how the chain reaction unfolded. Police reports, witness statements, photographs, and sometimes even traffic cameras can help piece together what happened. In many cases, the driver who caused the initial collision may bear responsibility, but every situation is different.

We often hear about “chain reaction” crashes. How do those usually happen?
Chain reaction accidents often occur when traffic slows suddenly and drivers don’t have enough distance between vehicles to stop safely. One collision can set off a domino effect involving multiple cars. Determining responsibility may involve looking at factors like speed, following distance, and whether drivers were paying attention.

Can more than one driver be responsible in a crash like that?
Yes, it’s possible. In some situations, investigators may determine that multiple drivers contributed to the accident. Each driver’s actions leading up to the crash are evaluated to determine how the collision occurred and who may be at fault.

What should someone do if they’re involved in a multi-car accident?
The first priority is always safety and making sure anyone who is injured receives medical attention. After that, it’s important to call law enforcement so an official report can be created. If it’s safe to do so, taking photos of the vehicles, the roadway, and the overall scene can also be helpful in documenting what happened.

And if someone has questions after an accident involving multiple vehicles?
Because these types of accidents can be complex, it’s important to speak with someone who understands how liability is determined, like the lawyers at Greene & Phillips. Call, text or come by anytime.

These recoveries and testimonials are not an indication of future results. Every case is different, and regardless of what friends, family, or other individuals may say about what a case is worth, each case must be evaluated on its own facts and circumstances as they apply to the law. The valuation of a case depends on the facts, the injuries, the jurisdiction, the venue, the witnesses, the parties, and the testimony, among other factors. Furthermore, no representation is made that the quality of the legal services to be performed is greater than the quality of legal services performed by other lawyers.
