Why the First Insurance Settlement Offer Is Often Too Low

March 24, 2026/in Mobile, Personal Injury, Studio 10

After a car accident, dealing with insurance companies can be confusing and stressful. Sometimes people are surprised when the insurance company offers a settlement very quickly after the crash. But what many people don’t realize is that the first offer may not reflect the full value of their claim. Recently, David Greene joined Studio 10 to explain why that can happen.

Some people are surprised when the insurance company makes an offer very soon after an accident. Why does that happen?
Insurance companies often try to resolve claims quickly, especially before the full extent of someone’s injuries is known. From their perspective, settling early can limit how much they ultimately have to pay. But in many cases, a person may still be receiving medical treatment or may not yet understand the long-term impact of their injuries.

So why might that first settlement offer be lower than what the claim is actually worth?
A big reason is that the insurance company may not yet have the full picture. After an accident, there can be ongoing medical treatment, physical therapy, lost wages, or other expenses that continue to develop over time. If someone accepts an offer too early, it may not account for those future costs.

If someone accepts that first offer, can they later ask for more compensation if their injuries get worse?
In most cases, once a settlement is accepted and the paperwork is signed, the claim is considered resolved. That means you typically can’t go back and ask for additional compensation later, even if medical issues continue or new expenses arise.

What should people keep in mind if they receive a quick settlement offer after an accident?
It’s important not to feel rushed into making a decision. Taking the time to understand the full extent of your injuries and damages can make a big difference. If you’re unsure whether an offer is fair, speaking with someone who understands how these claims are evaluated can help you make a more informed decision.

And if someone has questions about an insurance offer after an accident?
If you’ve been injured in an accident and receive a settlement offer, it can be helpful to speak with a local personal injury attorney, like the lawyers at Greene & Phillips, who can review the situation and explain your options.
