Holiday Season Accidents
The holiday season is one of the busiest and most dangerous times on the road. Whether people are traveling to see family, driving home from Christmas parties, or heading out for New Year’s celebrations, traffic increases and so does the risk of accidents. Recently, David Greene joined Studio 10 to talk about how to stay safe during holiday travel and what to do if you’re involved in a crash.
Why do we see such an increase in accidents during the holidays?
There are a few reasons. First, there are simply more people on the road: people traveling long distances, often in unfamiliar areas. Second, many drivers are rushed or stressed, which leads to speeding or distraction. And finally, this is one of the biggest times of year for impaired driving. Holiday parties, family gatherings, and New Year celebrations unfortunately bring an increase in alcohol-related crashes.
What are some things people can do to keep themselves safe if they’re traveling this season?
Plan ahead. Make sure your vehicle is in good shape: check your tires, brakes, wipers, and fluid levels. Give yourself extra time so you’re not tempted to speed. Avoid driving while tired, especially on long trips. And absolutely never drink and drive. If you’re going to a party, arrange a designated driver or rideshare. A little planning goes a long way in preventing serious accidents.
We also see a lot of distracted driving this time of year. Why is that?
People are on their phones more: checking GPS, answering holiday messages, changing music, coordinating with family. And drivers with kids in the car have even more distractions. But even a moment of looking away from the road can cause a major accident. Staying focused is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself and your family.
If someone is involved in an accident during holiday travel, what steps should they take at the
scene?
First, call 911 and make sure everyone gets medical attention. Then, if you can safely do so, take pictures of everything: vehicle damage, road conditions, skid marks, traffic signs, anything relevant. Get contact information for witnesses. And don’t admit fault or apologize, because insurance companies may use that against you later. The more information you collect early, the stronger your case will be.
And some people feel guilty about filing a claim during the holidays. What would you say to them?
It’s important to remember that when you file a claim, you’re usually dealing with the insurance company, not the individual driver. Insurance exists to help pay for medical bills, lost wages, and other damages caused by an accident. You’re simply using the coverage that’s there to protect you.
