Mardi Gras Safety
Mardi Gras season is officially underway here in Mobile, bringing parades, parties, and thousands of people downtown and along parade routes. While it’s a fun and exciting time for our community, it’s also a time when accidents and injuries tend to increase. Recently, David Greene from joined Studio 10 to talk about Mardi Gras safety and what people should keep in mind during the season.
Mardi Gras is such a big part of life here in Mobile. Why do we tend to see more injuries this time of year?
There’s just a lot going on all at once. You’ve got large crowds, alcohol at many events, people walking in the streets, kids reaching for throws, and drivers navigating detours and unfamiliar traffic patterns. None of that is bad on its own, but when you combine it all, the risk of accidents goes up- especially pedestrian injuries, falls, and vehicle-related accidents.
What are some of the most common injuries you see during Mardi Gras season?
We see a lot of pedestrian accidents, especially near parade routes. We also see trip-and-fall injuries from uneven sidewalks, cords, barricades, or wet pavement. And unfortunately, impaired driving incidents tend to increase during Mardi Gras celebrations, particularly late at night when people are heading home from balls or parties.
What advice do you have for people attending parades or events?
Stay aware of your surroundings. Keep children close, especially near floats and moving vehicles. Wear comfortable shoes with good traction. And if you choose to drink alcohol, pace yourself and make sure you have a safe ride home planned ahead of time. Smart choices can prevent serious injuries.
What about drivers? What should they be thinking about during Mardi Gras?
Drivers need to slow down and expect pedestrians, even in places they wouldn’t normally see them. Parade routes change traffic patterns, and people may cross streets unexpectedly. And of course, never drive impaired. If you’re planning to drink, use a rideshare or designate a driver. It’s not just about avoiding a ticket- it’s about keeping people safe.
If someone is injured during Mardi Gras, what should they do in the moment?
First, get medical attention right away. Then, if possible, document what happened: take photos, note where you were, and get witness names. Mardi Gras scenes can change quickly, so that information matters. And talk to a local personal injury attorney, like the lawyers at Greene & Phillips, before dealing with insurance companies. These cases can involve multiple parties, and it helps to have someone guide you through it.
Mardi Gras is about fun and tradition, but safety still matters.
Exactly. We want people to enjoy everything that makes Mardi Gras special in Mobile- just do it safely. Looking out for yourself and others helps make it a great season for everyone.
