Massive Car Wreck on I-65 at the Dolly Parton Bridge

Significant Multi-Vehicle Accident on I-65’s Dolly Parton Bridge Highlights the Importance of Road Safety

July 9, 2024/in MVA News

MOBILE, Alabama: Early on July 9th, 2024, a severe multi-vehicle collision on the northbound lanes of the General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge, also known as the Dolly Parton Bridge, caused substantial traffic disruption and numerous injuries. The accident, which occurred shortly before 7:00 AM, involved six cars, three 18-wheelers, and a box truck. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, but the incident underscores the critical importance of road safety and awareness.

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) reported that the collision involved ten vehicles: six cars, three 18-wheelers, and a box truck. The significant number of vehicles contributed to extensive damage and a complicated cleanup operation.

While ALDOT confirmed multiple injuries, specific numbers were not disclosed. Among the injured was an individual who, in a desperate attempt to avoid an oncoming 18-wheeler, jumped off the bridge and was injured in the process. He was promptly rescued by the Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The accident caused a major traffic standstill, with vehicles backed up for several hours. One driver, Eric Chitty, told WKRG News 5 being stuck from 6:45 AM until just before 11:00 AM. By noon, the northbound lanes had reopened, and traffic flow returned to normal.

Wet road conditions were identified as a contributing factor to the accident. Witnesses and first responders noted the absence of tire marks, suggesting that vehicles may have skidded due to the slick surface.

The swift response from emergency services, including ambulances, fire trucks, and police, was crucial in managing the situation. Their efforts ensured the timely rescue and treatment of all injured individuals, and the reopening of all lanes by 10:54 AM, earlier than initially anticipated.
